Autumn Area Meeting – Monday 22 October 2018

Representatives from twenty out of twenty-two of the societies in the North East Area met together at the newly refurbished Folk Hall, New Earswick for the Autumn Meeting.  We were fortunate to be joined by our new National Chair, Julie Goldsmith and by Kath Bowen, National Co-ordinator for Heritage Volunteering.

Kath gave us an enthusiastic talk encouraging us to shout much louder about our heritage volunteers, who often work away unnoticed and unsung.  Heritage Volunteers she said are shy about their activities!  She spoke of the many different projects in which members are engaged, talked about ways of finding new projects and explained the potential for members from several societies to work together as a team.

Following Kath’s talk, we were particularly pleased to welcome Julie Goldsmith, who is a member of The Arts Society Nidd Valley and was previously Chair of The Arts Society Oundle.  Julie took us through the results of the SWOT analysis in which we had all participated at our Spring Area Meetings and the actions that the Trustees will be taking as a result.  She affirmed that the Trustees’ activities would be informed by the concerns and priorities of local societies.  They also recognise that some parts of our organisation have become quite antiquated in the context of the 21st century.  Overall, the Trustees are determined to better support our societies as part of promoting the arts as a whole.  Her presentation was both engaging and positive and everyone came away from the meeting looking forward to the future development of The Arts Society.
